Senior Independent Software Developer

Company: A.Team
Location: Americas, Europe, Israel
Published: 2025-10-16

You must be located in the Americas, Europe, or Israel to apply.

A·Team is a VC-backed, stealth, application-only home on the internet for senior independent software builders to team up with hand-picked, high-growth companies on their next big thing.

After talking with hundreds of independent engineers, designers, and product folks, we heard over and over that finding vetted, high-quality, consistent clients is hard, and projects are often too small to be rewarding. A·Team matches small teams of the most talented builders in the world with companies backed by a16z, YC, Softbank, General Catalyst, etc. on a contract basis for many of their most important initiatives. We quietly launched in May 2020, and have helped A·Teamers earn $85+ million since.

As part of A·Team, you can expect:

  • High-paying, meaningful missions with the most audacious companies sent your way; generally $90-$150+/hr, with vetted, fascinating clients doing work that matters. We're picky about who we partner with; new clients only come in via trusted referral. We've worked with Lyft, McGraw Hill, ClearCo, Pepsi, Walmart, the former CEO of Waze, the leading vaccine production software, several new unicorns we can't say here, and dozens of startups backed by a16z/YC/Softbank/Insight/Tiger/etc.
  • Work alongside friends old & new: our niche is small/diverse product teams, since clients with larger budgets and higher-impact work tell us they want teams, not individuals. Of course, we keep friends together whenever we can.
  • Full autonomy: say "no" to things that don't excite you. The most talented builders often juggle a few things at once, so there's never pressure to join an A·Team mission if you don't have the bandwidth. If we're no longer a fit, it's easy to leave or pause too.
  • Small, curated, off-the-record gatherings: for conversations hard to have elsewhere. Long-term, we're creating micro-communities for the world's top builders to become friends around the things they care about.
  • Keep 100% of what you earn: if you charge $120/hr, you get $120/hr. A·Team makes money by charging a small, flat, transparent platform fee on top of your rate.

How to apply:

Go here: https://build.a.team/remotivereferral + mention Remotive. We respect your time so the application is short. We're also much more interested in seeing what you've made, and excited to chat more if there’s a fit.

What you’ll do:

  • Once part of A.Team, you’ll regularly be invited to impactful missions that match your interests. Find the right pick from early-stage incubations with world-class founders, to fast-growing super-funded companies, to old school non-tech incumbents looking to build as a tech giant would

  • Missions usually involve building an ambitious piece of software from 0 to 1 as part of a small 3-4 person team.

  • You’ll be paid to scope it out, give the client options, guide strategy, and execute on the selected solution. Sometimes the client has a clear vision, sometimes not; which is why A.Team builders tend to be senior folks who can work together to find the right direction.

Who A·Team is for:

  • Senior software developers who left large companies and high-growth startups to pursue their craft with autonomy.

  • Those who prefer consistent contract work over a full-time role, who want to create a variety of new products alongside other top-tier builders.

  • The majority of A.Teamers spend most of their time doing independent work, but a sizeable percentage are either employed full-time (but testing out client work), bootstrapping a side project, or looking for their next big thing

Who A·Team is not for:

  • People looking for small gigs

  • Folks looking to build simple wordpress/wix/squarespace-style websites

  • Those still early in their careers (<4 years) and recent university/bootcamp grads (at least not yet)

Our long-term vision:

A·Team is a new type of company for a new kind of independent software builder. We call them "unhirables": people who traditional companies couldn’t hire full-time even if they wanted to, but who want to do their most meaningful work with their favorite people in small, autonomous, distributed expert teams.

To help us secure amazing missions, we raised $60 million+  from Insight Partenrs, Tiger Global, NFX, RocNation, along with the former CEO of Upwork, the founders of Fiverr and Lemonade, Apple's Global Head of Recruiting, YC Partner Aaron Harris, Wharton's Adam Grant, and Duke's Dan Ariely.

Senior Backend EngineerLocation: Remote (Outside the U.S.)
    Type: Contract

As a Senior Backend Engineer at BSC Analytics, you’ll be part of a high-performing team of four to five engineers tackling complex platform challenges for large-scale enterprises. If you thrive on learning, moving fast, and solving real-world problems across a mix of environments — both modern and legacy — this role is for you.

Every week brings new opportunities to sharpen your technical skills, collaborate with top engineers, and grow your reputation as a trusted expert. You’ll work on platforms that power mission-critical systems — all within a flexible, remote-first culture that values deep expertise, autonomy, and continuous learning.

About the RoleWe’re looking for a Senior Backend Engineer with a passion for building scalable, resilient systems that drive AI-powered innovation. You’ll be a key contributor to our backend architecture — designing APIs, scaling distributed systems, and collaborating closely with AI and product teams to bring cutting-edge ideas to production.

This isn’t a role for someone who just wants to maintain the status quo. At BSC Analytics, we move quickly, think boldly, and take ownership from concept to launch. You’ll join a culture that celebrates curiosity, encourages experimentation, and values engineers who balance technical excellence with a sense of humor and humility.

    Key Responsibilities
    • Design, build, and maintain scalable backend services and APIs to support AI/ML-powered applications.
    • Collaborate with AI/ML teams to productionize models, ensuring performance, security, and reliability.
    • Implement best practices for security, performance, and scalability across backend systems.
    • Build robust observability — monitoring, logging, and alerting — for deployed applications.
    • Partner with cross-functional teams (frontend, product management, DevOps, ML engineers) to deliver high-quality features on time.
    • Stay on top of emerging technologies and advocate for smart adoption that keeps us ahead of the curve.

Skills, Knowledge and ExpertiseRequired Skills & Qualifications
    • 5+ years of professional backend development experience, with at least 3+ years using Python and Node.js.
    • Deep understanding of API design (REST, GraphQL, gRPC) and microservices architecture.
    • Experience with cloud platforms, preferably Azure/AWS (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and containerization/orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes).
    • Solid understanding of databases (SQL and NoSQL), caching strategies, and data modeling.
    • Familiarity with the AI/ML lifecycle — from model training to deployment and monitoring.
    • Strong background in software engineering best practices (CI/CD, code reviews, automated testing, Git workflows).
    • Experience with asynchronous programming and event-driven architectures (e.g., Kafka, RabbitMQ).
    • Excellent problem-solving skills with an emphasis on scalability, reliability, and performance optimization.
    • Clear communicator and natural mentor — someone who elevates the team and drives technical strategy.
    Preferred (Nice-to-Have)
    • Hands-on experience with AI/ML frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch, Hugging Face) or MLOps tools (MLflow, Kubeflow, SageMaker).
    • Experience in data engineering — building large-scale data ingestion and processing pipelines.
    • Background in startup or high-growth environments, especially in delivering AI-powered products.

    Why You’ll Love Working Here
At BSC Analytics, we don’t just ship code — we ship impact. You’ll join a team that values deep technical curiosity, open collaboration, and a strong sense of ownership. We believe in doing work that’s challenging, meaningful, and occasionally a little weird — in the best way.

You’ll get the trust to run with ideas, the support to grow your skills, and the camaraderie of teammates who genuinely love what they do.

    Our Values
    • We Touch Reality - Customers and their stories are not foreign. We actively seek out engagement with them, whether calling them on the phone, meeting through conferences, or listening to interactions with product/sales.
    • They Win, We Win - Above all else, no other metric matters more to measuring our performance as an Engineering organization than Customers succeeding through our product. We build for them, not ourselves.
    • Bias for Action - When you see a problem you can solve, fix it. We don't wait for someone else to tell you it's your job, we seize the initiative. For major architectural changes, features, or anything that affects other teams' work, we give people a heads up but don't wait for consensus to start exploring solutions.
    • Shared Ownership - We all own the outcomes, not just our individual pieces. When something breaks, we focus on fixing the system together rather than finding who's at fault. Mistakes are inevitable, how we handle them as a team defines us.
    • Transparency First - We emphasize keeping engineering discussions and topics in the public forum, not tucked away in DMs or private channels. Those spaces are specifically for conversations that cannot be had elsewhere.
